27 Farmer-Herder Conflict Alerts in Katsina, Zamfara

In June 2026, the International Organisation for Migration reported 27 conflict and livestock movement alerts across seven local government areas in Katsina and Zamfara states. The alerts included 21 event alerts and six movement alerts, primarily monitored in Batsari, Dan Musa, Jibia, Faskari, and Safana LGAs of Katsina, and Bungudu and Gusau LGAs of Zamfara.

Gusau recorded the highest share of alerts at 26%, with Gada/Karakai Ward in Bungudu being the worst-hit location with six event alerts. The report indicated that all six livestock movement alerts involved late arrivals of cattle, totaling 957 cattle moving across states and into the Niger Republic.

The report identified farm destruction and late herd movements as significant triggers for conflicts, each accounting for 40% of cases. Local farmers and breeders were the most affected groups, involved in 71% of the events.
