Museveni Sworn In for Seventh Term as Uganda's President

Yoweri Museveni, aged 81, was sworn in for his seventh term as President of Uganda on January 26, 2021, during a ceremony at Kololo Independence Grounds in Kampala. Museveni, who has been in power since 1986, won the election held in January with 71% of the vote, according to Uganda's Electoral Commission.

His main opponent, Bobi Wine, whose real name is Robert Kyagulanyi, received 24% of the votes. The election was marked by a nationwide internet blackout and reports of intimidation and abduction of opposition members.

Museveni has changed the constitution twice to remove presidential term limits and is one of Africa's longest-serving leaders. The ceremony was attended by various African leaders, including Tanzania's President Samia Suluhu Hassan and South Sudan's Salva Kiir.

Analysts suggest that Museveni's continued presidency raises questions about when he intends to retire, as many Ugandans have known no other leader.
