Abiodun: Governors Should Account for Subsidy Gains

Dapo Abiodun, the Governor of Ogun State, asserted that governors should be held accountable for the financial gains from the removal of the petrol subsidy, rather than President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. Speaking at an All Progressives Congress (APC) rally, Abiodun highlighted that the subsidy removal has led to increased allocations to state governments, enabling them to finance infrastructure and development projects.

He criticized opposition politicians for demanding that Tinubu explain the use of subsidy removal gains, stating, “It is we (governors) that should make such explanations because it is we, state governors, that collect the money.” Abiodun's comments come amid ongoing political debates regarding the economic impact of the subsidy removal. Atiku Abubakar, the presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress, has criticized the Tinubu administration for not accounting for the savings generated and has vowed to restore the subsidy if elected in 2027.

In response, Tinubu described the proposal as indicative of a lack of understanding of governance and economy.
