Nigeria Withdraws from 2026 African Table Tennis Championships

Nigeria is set to miss the 2026 African Table Tennis Championships scheduled to be held in Morocco, marking a significant setback for the country's reputation as a table tennis powerhouse in Africa. This absence is a direct result of Nigeria's failure to participate in the Western Region Championship in Conakri, Guinea, which was crucial for qualification.

The Nigeria Table Tennis Federation (NTTF) faced financial constraints that hindered their ability to send a team, despite efforts to secure participation. NTTF President Adesoji Tayo expressed regret over the withdrawal, citing exorbitant flight costs and lack of support from the National Sports Commission (NSC) as key factors.

Four cadet players were sent to Accra, Ghana, for the 2026 African Youth Championship, while the NTTF managed to prepare a 16-man team led by Matthew Kuti and Favour Ojo for the upcoming competition. The inability to compete in Guinea has dented Nigeria's qualification prospects for the 2027 World Championship.
