Otaokpukpu Dismisses Call for Obi's Return to Labour Party

Vincent Otaokpukpu, the director of the Legal Obedience Movement, has criticized Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed's call for former presidential candidate Peter Obi to rejoin the Labour Party, asserting that such a move lacks legal backing within Nigeria's current electoral framework. Otaokpukpu explained that the provisions of the Electoral Act make it challenging for politicians to switch parties within a short timeframe, particularly during party primaries.

He noted that while the Nigerian Constitution guarantees freedom of association, recent electoral provisions complicate party movement and participation in primaries, as they require a party membership list. Otaokpukpu argued that these provisions may conflict with constitutional rights, specifically Section 40 of the 1999 Constitution, which guarantees the freedom to belong to a political party.

He emphasized that Obi's return to the Labour Party is limited by procedural realities and urged a focus on addressing inconsistencies in the electoral act rather than political speculation regarding party movements.
