Jos Struggles to Restore Peace Amid Ongoing Violence

Jos, the capital of Plateau State, has struggled to regain its status as a peaceful city since the 2001 ethnic and religious violence that erupted following the appointment of a controversial chairman for the poverty alleviation program. The violence led to mass displacement, with many fleeing to Jos from surrounding areas.

Despite attempts by various administrations, including that of former Chief of Army Staff Gen. Chris Ali and Governor Jonah Jang, to restore peace, the situation has deteriorated, particularly after the controversial 2008 local council elections.

The judicial commission of inquiry led by Bola Ajibola failed to yield positive results, and the establishment of a Joint Task Force did not effectively contain the violence. The current governor, Simon Lalong, faces ongoing challenges as insecurity persists, and the once-bustling city has seen a significant decline in commercial and social activities, leading to a state of fear and desperation among residents.
