Coutinho Joins Santos, Reunites with Neymar After Vasco Exit

Philippe Coutinho has signed with Santos until the end of the season, marking his first club-level reunion with Neymar, a close friend and Brazil teammate. Coutinho, 34, became a free agent after departing Vasco da Gama in February, concluding his second tenure at the club.

Santos confirmed his signing on Monday, assigning him the number 11 shirt. Coutinho had initially returned to Vasco on loan from Aston Villa in July 2024 before making the move permanent, making 81 appearances.

He left Vasco due to severe mental exhaustion and negative reactions from supporters. At his Santos presentation, Coutinho explained that he made significant financial sacrifices to join Vasco, stating he had a year left on his Aston Villa contract but ensured Vasco would not incur any transfer costs.

He revealed the emotional toll of losing the Copa do Brasil final and the subsequent abuse he faced, leading to his decision to prioritize his health. Coutinho began his career at Vasco and has played for several top clubs, including Liverpool and Barcelona.
