Dele Momodu Warns Against One-Party Rule in Nigeria

Dele Momodu, a chieftain of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), cautioned against the potential establishment of a one-party state in Nigeria during an appearance on Arise Television's morning show on Monday. He criticized the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) for its miscalculations regarding the opposition, specifically mentioning key figures like former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi, and Rabiu Kwankwaso. Momodu expressed concern that the APC's attempts to weaken opposition parties could lead to internal crises and undermine democracy. He pointed out the swift recognition of factions within the People's Democratic Party (PDP) as evidence of growing political instability. Furthermore, he raised alarms about government officials exerting influence over the judiciary as part of a broader strategy to consolidate power. Momodu warned that efforts to centralize power in a single party could have long-term negative consequences for Nigeria's democratic system, asserting that any attempt to reduce the country to a one-party state would ultimately fail.
