Dickson Warns Against Civilian Dictatorship in Nigeria

On Friday, Senator Seriake Dickson, the National Leader of the Nigeria Democratic Congress and former governor of Bayelsa State, cautioned against the emergence of "civilian dictatorship" in Nigeria's democracy. Speaking in Abuja after receiving the Pillar of Nigeria Democracy Award at the Diplomatic Digest 6th Anniversary Lecture, he highlighted the dangers posed by elected leaders who undermine the Constitution and democratic institutions, equating their actions to those of military rulers.

Dickson reflected on Nigeria's democratic journey since 1999, asserting that democracy is essential for national development and requires a commitment to the rule of law, credible elections, and strong institutions. He expressed concern over the shrinking democratic space in Africa and criticized the current administration for diminishing Nigeria's influence within ECOWAS.

Dickson urged President Bola Tinubu to ensure that democratic institutions are not exploited for partisan interests and emphasized the importance of respecting constitutional provisions, including term limits and conducting free elections.
