Dr. Maureen Achebe: Pioneering Sickle Cell Care in Africa

Dr. Maureen Achebe is a lead hematologist and the clinic director of the hematology service at Brigham and Women's Hospital and Dana-Farber Cancer Institute.

She is also an associate professor of medicine and global health equity at Harvard Medical School, having graduated from the University of Port Harcourt and Yale School of Medicine. Dr.

Achebe specializes in sickle cell disease and iron deficiency, focusing on equitable healthcare delivery. She oversees the care of 200 adults living with sickle cell disease at the Brigham and Women's Hospital comprehensive sickle cell center and leads clinical research trials.

Beyond her clinical work, she collaborates with the American Society of Hematology to expand hematological care globally and supports newborn screening initiatives for sickle cell disease across seven African countries through the Consortium for Newborn Screening in Africa. Additionally, she serves as the associate director for sickle cell disease integration in the World Health Organization's PEN-Plus program.
