Nigerians' Resilience Key to Sustaining Tinubu's Reforms

The Independent Media and Policy Initiative (IMPI) released a policy statement emphasizing that the resilience and patriotic endurance of Nigerians have been vital in maintaining President Bola Tinubu's economic reforms. Dr Omoniyi Akinsiju, Chairman of IMPI, noted that without this resilience, Tinubu's economic agenda would have failed.

Nigerians have acted as "primary shock absorbers" during the painful transition, particularly following the removal of fuel subsidies and the floating of the Naira, which led to significant inflation and cost-of-living increases. The public's endurance has provided the government with the necessary fiscal breathing room to avoid a sovereign default and rebuild external reserves.

Akinsiju highlighted that for these reforms to succeed, transparency in the use of saved revenues is essential, with citizens playing a critical role in enforcing the social contract. He stressed that long-term economic stability requires structural changes in production and consumption, rather than relying solely on central bank interventions or foreign investments.
