Burnham Critiques Infantino's FIFA Leadership Over Proposal

British Prime Minister Andy Burnham stated that Gianni Infantino is “the wrong man” to lead FIFA, criticizing a controversial proposal to sell stakes in FIFA competitions to private investors. Burnham described the proposal as “an outrageous suggestion,” indicating that it reflects poorly on Infantino’s leadership.

His comments followed the Asian Football Confederation's (AFC) rejection of the proposal, joining UEFA and CONCACAF in expressing concerns that it could undermine the integrity of the FIFA World Cup. The AFC emphasized that the World Cup's strength comes from the participation of all Confederations and leading football nations, urging a reconsideration of any proposal that risks compromising the competition's unity.

The opposition against Infantino intensified after Carlos Cordeiro, Infantino’s senior adviser on global strategy and governance, resigned, labeling the proposal as “a bad deal for football” that could “mortgage football’s future.” The combined opposition from UEFA, CONCACAF, and the AFC represents 136 of FIFA’s 211 member associations, a significant voting bloc capable of blocking the proposal.
