Louisiana Man Cured of Sickle Cell Disease Through Gene Therapy

Daniel Cressy, a 23-year-old resident of Metairie, Louisiana, became the first person in the Gulf Coast region to be functionally cured of sickle cell disease after successfully undergoing curative gene therapy at Manning Family Children’s Hospital in New Orleans. This milestone was achieved on a Monday, following a two-year process that involved collecting his cells, sending them to Scotland for genetic modification, and then infusing the modified cells back into his body after chemotherapy treatment.

Cressy, who has lived with sickle cell disease since infancy, was previously unable to pursue his dream of becoming a commercial pilot due to FAA licensing restrictions. His successful treatment, utilizing Casgevy’s CRISPR/Cas9 technology, was celebrated with a ceremonial bell ringing attended by family, friends, local officials, and his medical team.

Cressy expressed hope that his story would inspire others and plans to continue working towards his aviation career while also writing a book titled "Blessing in the Skies.".
