Anambra Residents Plan Protest Over Power Outages

Residents of Anambra State are organizing a protest on March 14 at Ekwuem Square near the government house in Awka, due to ongoing power outages and issues with electricity billing. The protest, titled "Enough is Enough," aims to highlight challenges faced by electricity consumers and demand improvements in electricity supply, immediate installation of prepaid meters, cessation of estimated billing, suspension of electricity tariffs, and an end to alleged exploitation by the Enugu Electricity Distribution Company.

Osita Obi, a member of the protest organizing group, has formally notified the state governor, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo, and the Anambra State Police Command of their intentions.

Tochukwu Ikenga, a spokesperson for the police, has urged residents to engage constructively with relevant authorities instead of resorting to street protests that could disrupt public order. The police emphasize their commitment to maintaining peace and public safety during this period, especially with the upcoming swearing-in ceremony for Governor Soludo's second term on March 17.
