U.S. to Designate Sudanese Muslim Brotherhood as Terrorists

The United States has announced its intention to designate the Sudanese Muslim Brotherhood as a terrorist organization, with the designation expected to take effect on March 16, 2026. This plan was disclosed in a press statement by the U.S.

Department of State on Monday, with Secretary of State Marco Rubio highlighting the group's involvement in violence against civilians during the ongoing conflict in Sudan. Rubio accused the Sudanese Muslim Brotherhood of undermining efforts to resolve the conflict and advancing a violent Islamist ideology.

The group has reportedly received training and support from Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), which has been labeled a state sponsor of terrorism. The U.S. aims to utilize this designation to deprive the Iranian regime of resources that support terrorism, as stated by Rubio.

The Sudanese Muslim Brotherhood's Al Baraa Bin Malik Brigade has previously faced sanctions under Executive Order 14098 in September 2025 due to its role in the brutal war in Sudan.
