South African Police Investigate 11 Women Found Dead

South African police have confirmed that the number of women found dead in Ekurhuleni has reached 11 over the past 10 weeks, with eight victims discovered in September alone. The latest body was found in an open veld on a Sunday afternoon, identified by a security company vehicle that alerted the police.

The identity and age of this victim remain unknown, as do the circumstances of her death. This discovery followed the finding of a semi-naked woman near a cemetery, who appeared to have been stoned to death, according to provincial police chief Tommy Mthombeni.

A suspect linked to this killing was arrested nearly 400 kilometers away, bringing the total number of arrests to four, although no connections between the cases have been established. The other victims, mostly women in their 20s and 30s, showed signs of sexual assault.

The situation has intensified concerns over gender-based violence in South Africa, where the government has declared it a national disaster, yet incidents continue to rise.
