HURIWA Demands Investigation into NYSC Members' Release

The Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA) has demanded an independent investigation into the release of 20 abducted prospective National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members, following conflicting accounts regarding ransom payments. HURIWA's National Coordinator, Comrade Emmanuel Nnadozie Onwubiko, urged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Imo State Governor Hope Uzodimma to clarify their positions and apologize if investigations reveal misleading statements about the victims' release.
While the Nigeria Police Force attributed the release to search-and-rescue operations in Amakohia Ubi village, the Imo State Government insisted that no ransom was paid. However, Alirat Wahab, a mother of one of the victims, claimed her family raised ₦6 million after the kidnappers initially demanded ₦50 million for each victim.
HURIWA emphasized the need for clarity on whether ransom was paid and called on the Inspector-General of Police to provide a detailed account of the operation.
