NIMET Warns Nigerian Farmers Against Assuming Start of 2026 Rainy Season

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NIMET) has cautioned farmers and residents across the country not to mistake the recent scattered showers for the commencement of the 2026 rainy season. The Director of Weather Services at NIMET explained that these scattered showers are part of a pseudo-rain prediction that is expected to dissipate within two weeks, potentially followed by a prolonged dry spell.

Prof. Weli advised farmers to refrain from planting to prevent devastating losses and additional agricultural risks.

NIMET also emphasized the potential health dangers linked to consuming rainwater during this period. The agency disclosed plans to release its comprehensive 2026 season climate prediction on February 10, 2026, covering weather patterns from February to December, including sector-specific impacts and localized predictions at the local government level to aid in planning and mitigating potential losses.
