Rising Costs Threaten 2026 World Cup's Fan Appeal

Abdulkarim Tsoho, a Kano-based sports analyst, has expressed concerns that the rising costs associated with attending the 2026 FIFA World Cup could diminish its emotional appeal for ordinary fans. In an exclusive interview with Daily Post, Tsoho highlighted that the current ticket prices and travel expenses are becoming unaffordable for many, risking the tournament's accessibility.

He noted that the World Cup has traditionally been an event for ordinary fans, who often save for years to attend. However, with ticket prices and associated costs soaring, many, including Nigerian fans like Ahmad Bello and Shehu Usman Salihu, are abandoning their plans to attend.

They cite the high costs of tickets, flights, accommodation, and other expenses as prohibitive. Tsoho emphasized that the financial burden could lead to a less diverse crowd and a more commercialized event, undermining the World Cup's universal appeal.

The tournament is set to be hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
