Alaafin of Oyo Calls for Political Unity to Address Nigeria's Issues

The Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Akeem Owoade, called on politicians to set aside primordial sentiments and focus on pragmatic solutions to Nigeria's numerous challenges. In a statement issued by his Director of Media and Publicity, Bode Durojaiye, to commemorate Nigeria’s 2026 Independence celebration, he stressed that national growth relies on justice, moral worth, responsibility, and selflessness from both leaders and citizens.

He highlighted the need for politicians to collaborate and understand state-building issues, referencing the amalgamation of the Southern and Northern protectorates in 1914, which united diverse groups. The Alaafin noted that traditional rulers play a crucial role as mobilizers and advisers and should be empowered to strengthen traditional institutions, which are remnants of the pre-colonial political system.

He acknowledged past leaders like Chief Obafemi Awolowo, Dr Nnamdi Azikiwe, and the Sardauna of Sokoto for their contributions to Nigeria's unity and development.
