2027 Election: Presidency Speaks on What Would Happen If Jonathan Decides to Run Against Tinubu

President Bola Tinubu's policy communication adviser, Barrister Daniel Bwala, addressed rumors of former President Goodluck Jonathan potentially running against Tinubu in the 2027 election. Bwala suggested that Jonathan's comeback bid could unsettle President Tinubu, as it may garner support from the South-South geopolitical zone.

Despite Jonathan's loss to President Buhari in 2015, a federal high court ruling in 2022 deemed him eligible to contest again. Bwala referenced a previous court ruling that stated Section 137 could not retroactively prevent Jonathan from running for the presidency.

This news comes after former Jigawa state governor Sule Lamido urged the PDP to consider Jonathan as a strong candidate for the 2027 election. Additionally, former presidential aide Reno Omokri clarified that a photograph from April 2025 did not indicate any political alignment.
