Femi Falana Criticizes Nigerian Senate's Delays on Electoral Act Amid Concerns for 2027 Elections

Nigerian human rights lawyer Femi Falana has criticized the Nigerian Senate for repeatedly postponing the Electoral Act amendment bill, expressing concerns that the delays could severely compromise the credibility of the 2027 general elections. Falana highlighted the unnecessary delays in establishing a committee to review the bill, emphasizing that the focus should be on electoral reforms rather than preserving the status quo.

He called for critical reforms in Nigeria's electoral framework, including provisions for electronic transmission of results and penalties for electoral offenses. Falana also criticized the Lagos State Government for its handling of protests and demolitions, stressing the importance of due process and citizens' rights.

He urged Nigerian civil society groups to hold lawmakers accountable to ensure the passage of the Electoral Act amendment bill. Falana emphasized the need for key electoral reforms to address the existing flaws in the system and ensure a transparent and fair electoral process.
