Nigeria's Foreign Minister Warns Diplomats Ahead of 2027 Elections

On September 17, the Federal Government of Nigeria, through Minister of Foreign Affairs Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, issued a warning to foreign diplomatic missions against making disparaging remarks and unsolicited comments about Nigeria's democracy as the nation prepares for the 2027 general elections. During her first formal engagement with the Diplomatic Corps in Abuja, Odumegwu-Ojukwu stressed the need for foreign missions to respect Nigeria's sovereignty and established diplomatic procedures.

She stated that while Nigeria welcomes international engagement, it must occur within the framework of mutual respect. The minister assured that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's administration is committed to a peaceful, free, fair, and credible electoral process.

She also instructed foreign missions to route official communications through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to ensure proper coordination and effective follow-up, emphasizing that the ministry serves as a bridge to the Nigerian Government.
