Umar Bago Addresses Control Over Security Agencies in Niger

Niger State Governor Umar Bago addressed his limited authority over state security agencies during an interview on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics. His comments came in the wake of the deaths of 37 suspected illegal miners while in the custody of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC).

Bago emphasized that, despite being the chief security officer of the state, he does not have direct oversight of the NSCDC, police, or other federal institutions, as they report to the federal government. He noted that the state government can only intervene when civil society organizations or the public raise complaints regarding unlawful detentions.

Bago stated, “Yes, definitely. You know, I’m just a chief security officer of the state by mouth,” highlighting the challenges faced in managing security issues and the lack of information regarding arrests unless complaints are formally submitted.
