Osimhen's Injury Forces Super Eagles to Seek Replacement

Victor Osimhen has been ruled out of Nigeria's opening two matches of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign after withdrawing from the Super Eagles squad due to a groin injury. The Galatasaray forward was part of the initial 24-man group but missed a recent match against Trabzonspor.

This situation presents a selection challenge for head coach Eric Chelle, who appears to have settled on Akor Adams as one of his attacking players in a 4-diamond-2 formation. Among the candidates to replace Osimhen are Awoniyi, who has been drafted into the squad as a direct replacement but has limited recent exposure to the team.

Tolu Arokodare, who had been seen as a potential understudy, has regained form on loan at Ajax. George Ilenikhena, a newcomer to the squad, brings energy and powerful shooting but lacks experience.

Moses Simon could also provide a different tactical option, and Samuel Chukwueze is in strong form, potentially allowing for a fluid front three.
