U.S. Issues Travel Advisory for Nigeria Amid Security Concerns

The U.S. Embassy updated its travel advisory for Nigeria on April 8, 2026, classifying the overall travel advisory as Level 3 (reconsider travel) and certain states, including Plateau, Jigawa, Kwara, Niger, and Taraba, as Level 4 (do not travel).

This advisory highlights the prevalence of violent crime, armed robbery, carjacking, kidnapping, and ransom, with U.S. citizens often being targets. The advisory reflects broader security challenges in Nigeria, as noted by former presidential candidate Peter Obi, who described the advisory as a bad omen for the nation.

Activist Omoyele Sowore questioned the advisory's implications. Nigerian Minister of Information Mohd Idris stated that the U.S. decision is a routine precaution and does not accurately reflect the country's situation.

Recent intelligence reports indicated security concerns in Abuja, prompting police to arrest 14 suspects linked to car theft and robbery syndicates. The advisory aligns with similar warnings from the UK and Canada regarding travel to Nigeria due to unpredictable security situations.
