Ahmadu Bello University Denies Involvement in Alleged Secret Nuclear Weapon Project

Ahmadu Bello University in Zaria has refuted claims of being involved in a secret nuclear weapon project in Nigeria. The university's Director of Public Affairs, Malam Auwalu Umar, dismissed allegations made in a video as misinformation aimed at the public.

The video falsely claimed that Nigerian scientists secretly enriched weapon-grade uranium in Kaduna in the 1980s using equipment from the AQ Khan network in Pakistan. ABU clarified that its scientists were not involved in uranium enrichment and only began training in nuclear energy research in 1980.

The university's first nuclear reactor was established in 1996 with the cooperation of the IAEA.
