Abuja Demolition Begins to Address Flooding Crisis

The Federal Capital Territory Administration initiated a demolition exercise on Tuesday in Abuja, specifically in Maitama District, following an order from Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory. This action targets structures built on designated water channels, which obstruct natural waterways.

Wike emphasized that the demolition would include properties owned by high-profile individuals, stating that no exceptions would be made based on status or political affiliation. He directed the FCT Department of Development Control to identify and remove such structures, reinforcing that the exercise would proceed without delay.

Wike attributed flooding in the area to illegal construction, poor enforcement of building regulations, and waste disposal issues. He also announced plans to desilt blocked drainages and accelerate key infrastructure projects to enhance the capital's resilience to flooding.

Wike's firm stance reflects a commitment to rectify structural violations and address the flooding crisis exacerbated by climate change and heavy rainfall.
