Wike Orders Demolition of Structures on Abuja Waterways

Nyesom Wike, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, has mandated the immediate demolition of all structures built on waterways and flood channels within the FCT, asserting that no exceptions will be made for high-profile individuals. This directive was issued during an assessment visit to flood-affected areas in Maitama District.

Wike emphasized that the administration would not tolerate violations of the Abuja Master Plan and the safety of residents, regardless of the property owners' status. He instructed the FCT Department of Development Control to swiftly identify and dismantle illegal structures obstructing natural water passages.

Wike stated, “Any house that falls on the water channel will go down,” and reaffirmed the commitment to rectify long-standing structural violations. He also announced immediate facility management operations to desilt blocked drainages and advance key infrastructure projects to enhance flood resilience.

Wike attributed localized flooding to illegal constructions, failure to enforce building codes, and improper waste disposal, urging residents to adopt better waste management practices.
