Nigerian-born Striker Aghehowa Ruled Out of 2026 World Cup Due to ACL Injury

Nigerian-born striker Aghehowa, who plays for FC Porto, has been ruled out of the 2026 World Cup due to a torn anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in his right knee. The 21-year-old sustained the injury during a match against Sport CP in the Primeira Liga, forcing him off at halftime.

Aghehowa's injury is considered severe, with a typical recovery time of five months to a year, effectively ending his 2025-26 season. His absence will be a significant setback for both FC Porto, who are currently leading the Primeira Liga, and the Spain national team, for whom he made his senior debut in November 2024.

Aghehowa's rise in football has been rapid, moving from Atletico Madrid to Porto in 2024 after a failed transfer to Chelsea. Despite attracting interest from clubs like Newcastle United, his focus was on representing Spain in the World Cup.

However, his injury now leaves Spain coach Lui de la Fuente to consider alternative options for the tournament.
