Olisa Agbakoba Urges State Legislatures to Address Medical Negligence Crisis in Nigeria

Olisa Agbakoba, a prominent human rights activist and former President of the Nigerian Bar Association, has written to the Chairman of the Conference of Speakers of State Legislatures in Nigeria, Adebo Ogundoyin, urging immediate legislative intervention to tackle the escalating issue of medical negligence in Nigeria. Agbakoba highlights the failure of the existing regulatory framework to ensure patient safety, citing cases like the recent death of Nkanu Nnamdi, the twin son of acclaimed author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie's husband, Ivara Eseg, during a routine medical procedure at a private hospital in Lagos.

He emphasizes the need for holistic healthcare regulatory reforms at the state level to prevent such tragedies and strengthen oversight mechanisms. Agbakoba warns that without urgent reforms, the public's confidence in Nigeria's healthcare system will continue to erode.
