ActionAid Demands Clarity on N50,000 Cash Support Scheme

ActionAid Nigeria has urged the federal government to ensure transparency and accountability in the implementation of its proposed N50,000 cash support scheme for poor and vulnerable Nigerians. The call for transparency follows the announcement of the intervention by the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction, Dr Bernard Doro, on 30th October 2026.
ActionAid demanded full disclosure of the programme’s funding sources, beneficiary selection criteria, and disbursement arrangements to prevent political interference and ensure deserving beneficiaries are included. Andrew Mamedu, the country director of ActionAid Nigeria, emphasized the need for the government to clarify how the intervention would be financed and the total amount committed.
He expressed concerns over the lack of a disclosed programme budget and specific beneficiary targets. ActionAid estimated that providing N50,000 monthly to one million households would require N50 billion, while extending support to five million households would necessitate N250 billion.
The organization also questioned conflicting information regarding the payment structure of the assistance.
