Adamawa's Epidemiologist Reports 126 Diphtheria Cases

Adamawa State has recorded 126 suspected diphtheria cases, with 20 deaths, according to State Epidemiologist Jones Steven Kadabiyu. In a telephone interview, Kadabiyu stated that two cases have been confirmed positive and are currently receiving medical attention.

In September 2026 alone, 15 new cases were reported, with six patients hospitalized across various health facilities. The new cases emerged in Gombi, Ganye, Mubi South, Mayo-Belwa, Yola North, and Yola South LGAs.

The fatalities have resulted in a case fatality rate of 20.6%. Kadabiyu noted that suspected cases have been reported in 13 LGAs, including Demsa, Fufore, and others.

He identified late presentation at healthcare facilities as a significant challenge, as many caregivers initially resort to traditional medicine. The state government is enhancing epidemiological investigations, laboratory surveillance, and public awareness regarding the disease's symptoms and the importance of early medical intervention.
