ADC Critiques £746M Nigeria-UK Port Deal for Transparency

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has expressed strong opposition to the £746 million agreement signed during President Bola Tinubu's state visit to the United Kingdom, which aims to upgrade port infrastructure at two of Nigeria's busiest maritime centers in Lagos. The ADC, through its national public secretary Bolaji Abdullahi, emphasized the need for complete transparency regarding the deal's terms and its potential impact on the local economy.

They argue that the agreement, which is expected to enhance trade and generate employment, disproportionately favors the UK, which already enjoys a significant trade advantage over Nigeria. The ADC highlighted concerns about the repayment terms of the commercial loan, including interest rates and local content requirements.

They also questioned the timing and conditions of the agreement, suggesting it resembles colonial-era treaties that could mortgage Nigeria's future. The deal includes a £70 million contract for British Steel to supply steel billets, raising concerns about the benefits to Nigerian companies and workers.
