Adekunle Gold: Genotype Test Was Non-Negotiable Before Marrying Simi

Nigerian musician Adekunle Gold has disclosed that he underwent genotype testing with his wife Simi before their 2019 marriage, and made clear that genetic compatibility was a prerequisite for the relationship. In an appearance on the One54 Africa podcast, Gold stated he would have declined to marry Simi had she carried either the SS or AS genotype, both of which can result in sickle cell complications.

Simi's genotype is AA, which is compatible with his own. Gold framed his decision as a health responsibility rather than a romantic consideration, emphasizing that his stance on genetic screening before marriage was tied to concerns about the wellbeing of future children.

He explained that bringing a child into the world knowing they could inherit sickle cell disease was not a path he was willing to take. The singer positioned genotype compatibility as a non-negotiable factor in his relationship decision-making process.

The SS genotype results in sickle cell disease, a blood disorder in which red blood cells take on a rigid, crescent shape rather than their natural round form. This abnormality can trigger significant health complications throughout a person's life.

The AS genotype, often called the sickle cell trait, typically produces fewer symptoms but still carries genetic implications for future offspring. Gold's public remarks appear part of a broader effort to increase awareness around genotype screening among Nigerian couples.

He stressed the importance of individuals knowing their own genotype before entering relationships or making decisions about having children. His comments reflect discussions within Nigerian society about preventive health measures and informed reproductive choices.
