Senegalese Fans Face Jail Time After AFCON Final Violence

Eighteen Senegalese football fans are at risk of two years of imprisonment in Morocco after being detained following the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) final held on January 18. The Moroccan prosecutor has sought maximum penalties, accusing the fans of hooliganism and attempting to disrupt the match's proper conduct.

The final, which took place in Morocco, ended with Senegal defeating the host nation 1-0. During the match, Senegalese supporters attempted a pitch invasion, leading to a nearly 20-minute halt in the game due to protests over a late penalty awarded to Morocco.

The prosecutor presented evidence, including surveillance footage and medical reports documenting injuries among security personnel, as well as material damage to the stadium estimated at 4 million Moroccan dirhams (approximately $430,000). The case highlights the legal repercussions of fan violence in sports, particularly as Morocco prepares to co-host the 2030 World Cup alongside Spain and Portugal.
