Africa-France Summit: A New Era of Partnership

The Africa-France summit, held in Nairobi, Kenya, was co-hosted by French President Emmanuel Macron and Kenyan President William Ruto. This summit represented a pivotal moment in redefining the relationship between Africa and France, focusing on themes of equal partnership, co-investment, and shared sovereignty.

Macron acknowledged that France's traditional approach to Africa had become unsustainable, admitting that many viewed Africa as France's "backyard." He emphasized that African nations seek investment rather than charity, framing the future relationship around mutual strategic interests. The summit produced concrete economic announcements, including a pledge of $23 billion in investments, with $14 billion from French firms and $9 billion from African investors.

This summit is historically significant as it is the first traditional Africa-France summit held in a major Anglophone African country, reflecting a shift in France's policy towards Africa amidst growing anti-French sentiment in West Africa.
