Nigeria's Defence Minister Calls for Unity Against Terrorism

Dr. Bello Muhammed Matawalle, MON, Nigeria's Minister of State for Defence, called for enhanced continental cooperation among African Armed Forces to tackle terrorism, transnational organized crime, and emerging security threats. He delivered this address at a meeting in Bujumbura, Burundi, attended by AU officials, Defence Chiefs, and the Diplomatic Corps.

Dr. Matawalle emphasized the importance of the STCDSS in addressing complex security challenges, noting that threats such as terrorism, violent extremism, and cyber threats transcend national borders. He advocated for strengthened collaboration between the African Union, Regional Economic Communities, and Member States, highlighting the need for intelligence sharing and joint operations.

He also pointed out the evolving nature of security threats due to technology and stressed the importance of addressing root causes of insecurity, including poverty and unemployment. Dr. Matawalle reaffirmed Nigeria's commitment to regional peace operations and counter-terrorism initiatives, commending the AU's leadership for their contributions.
