Africa's Role in Global Circular Economy Highlighted

Olufunto Boroffice, founder of the waste management firm Chanja Datti, spoke at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology's annual conference held on April 22-23 in Cambridge, Massachusetts. The conference focused on innovation and global growth, where Boroffice addressed the challenges of waste management and the potential for Africa to lead in the circular economy.

She noted that Africa contributes less than 4% to global greenhouse gas emissions while being significantly affected by climate change, including droughts and floods. Boroffice emphasized the importance of reusing and repairing materials rather than traditional disposal methods.

She called for policies that empower marginalized groups, including waste pickers, and highlighted the role of women and youth in driving sustainable solutions. Boroffice referenced successful initiatives in various African countries, such as Rwanda's ban on single-use plastics and Ethiopia's mass tree planting efforts, urging stakeholders to recognize Africa's capacity to provide innovative solutions to global environmental challenges.
