Nigeria Faces Deadline for Africa Women’s Basketball League

Nigeria is in a precarious position regarding its participation in the Africa Women’s Basketball League qualifiers, as Zone 3 has announced that the preliminary competition will occur in Monrovia, Liberia, from October 4 to 10, 2026. The Nigeria Basketball Federation (NBBF) is under pressure to register a team, especially since the domestic women’s basketball league has not concluded, leaving limited time for clubs to prepare.

Léa Kane, Head of Competitions for Africa, communicated the details of the tournament and emphasized the need for national federations to begin registration immediately. Nigeria is not listed among the registered teams, and the deadline for submission of participation forms is September 10, 2026.

This tight timeline poses a significant challenge for the NBBF to identify a club capable of competing at the continental level. The potential absence of Nigeria from this major competition raises concerns for the country's women’s basketball program.
