Federal Government to Establish New Fire and Rescue Service

The Federal Government is set to repeal the Fire Service Act of 1963, which has been in place for 63 years, and establish a new Federal Fire and Rescue Service. This new service will have an expanded mandate that includes firefighting, emergency medical assistance, search and rescue, hazardous materials management, and disaster response.
Minister of Interior Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo announced this initiative on November 2 during the 2026 National Fire Safety Week in Abuja. He stated that the proposed legislation has completed its defense at the Federal Executive Council (FEC) and will be presented for consideration on Thursday.
Tunji-Ojo emphasized that the existing law is inadequate for current emergency management needs and limits the agency's operational capacity. The new framework aims to position the Federal Fire and Rescue Service as a comprehensive emergency response institution, capable of providing immediate assistance during various emergencies, including accidents and natural disasters.
