PDP Loses Five Reps as FG Files Charges Against Coup Suspects

The People's Democratic Party (PDP) experienced a significant setback as five of its members in the House of Representatives defected to other parties, highlighting a trend of political realignment ahead of the 2027 general elections. Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu remarked on the instability within the PDP, indicating that the defections reflect broader concerns about the party's viability.

Concurrently, the federal government filed 13 charges against six individuals, including two retired senior military officers and a police inspector, for allegedly conspiring to wage war against Nigeria and committing acts of terrorism. The charges were presented in the Federal High Court in Abuja, with prosecutors accusing the defendants of treason under the Treason Act.

This legal action follows previous arrests of military personnel and underscores ongoing concerns regarding national security. The political landscape remains tense as parties navigate internal disputes and external pressures.
