Agbedi named House Minority Leader following Chinda's departure

Speaker Tajudeen Abbas has appointed Frederick Agbedi, a Bayelsa lawmaker, as the new Minority Leader of the House of Representatives.
Frederick Agbedi, the member representing Sagbama and Ekeremor in Bayelsa State under the People's Democratic Party, has been appointed as Minority Leader of the House of Representatives. Speaker Tajudeen Abbas made the announcement during plenary on Thursday, following a decision reached by consensus within the opposition caucus.
The appointment fills the leadership void created by Kingsley Chinda's departure from the position. Chinda, who represented Obio Akpor in Rivers State, vacated the role as the opposition realigned following recent political developments within the lower chamber. Allegations of irregularities in the nomination process, including claims of forgery, were dismissed by Ikenga Ugochinyer during the proceedings.
Agbedi, now in his second term as a lawmaker, takes on a significant role within the opposition bloc during a period of strategic repositioning among minority parties in the 10th House. The appointment reflects efforts by opposition parties to consolidate their leadership structure and maintain organisational coherence within the chamber.
The selection process involved formal consultation and consensus-building among various opposition parties and caucus members before Abbas formally announced the decision to the full chamber. Abbas's pronouncement signals the resolution of a leadership gap that had persisted following Chinda's exit and the subsequent period during which the position remained vacant.
