APC Governors Engage with Opposition Amid Wike's Coalition

Aggrieved governors within the All Progressives Congress (APC) are initiating political realignments, engaging in talks with opposition figures as they respond to the rising influence of the Rainbow Coalition, led by Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory. This coalition is reportedly absorbing discontented APC members and politicians who were unsuccessful in party primaries.

The governors are concerned about Wike's claims that President Bola Tinubu has ceded nine states to his coalition for the upcoming governorship elections scheduled for February 6, shortly after the January 16 presidential election. Although the governors do not fear Tinubu's re-election, they are wary of Wike's strategy, which encourages voters to support Tinubu nationally while backing opposition candidates in state and legislative elections.

Some APC governors argue for the freedom to form alliances with other political blocs to safeguard their local interests. The realignment is also gaining traction in the North-Central, North-West, and North-East regions, raising concerns among northern APC leaders.
