AHFID's Dr. Kakanfo Advocates AI for Nigeria's Healthcare
Dr. Kunle Kakanfo, founder and CEO of the Africa Hub for Innovation & Development (AHFID), stated that artificial intelligence (AI) could help Nigeria bridge gaps in its healthcare workforce and enhance access to health services. Speaking at a media chat before the Artificial Intelligence in Health Summit 2026, scheduled for October 19 and 20 in Abuja, he highlighted AI's potential in areas like tuberculosis screening and cervical cancer detection.
Kakanfo stressed that AI should augment rather than replace healthcare professionals, as human oversight is crucial. He noted that Nigeria faces significant healthcare challenges, including an estimated 510,000 annual tuberculosis cases and high out-of-pocket healthcare costs.
The summit will focus on practical AI applications to address these challenges and the need for locally trained AI models using Nigerian health data. AHFID is already working in hospitals in the Federal Capital Territory to collect cough sounds for developing models to detect tuberculosis.
