INEC Chairman Warns of Electoral Threats Ahead of 2027

On a recent occasion in Abuja, Prof. Joash Amupitan, the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), addressed significant threats to Nigeria's electoral process ahead of the 2027 elections.

He identified a "sophisticated triad" of challenges, including AI-driven disinformation, manipulation of foreign information, and logistical deficits. During the 2nd Annual Alumni Association of the National Institute for Security Studies (AANISS) event, Amupitan stressed that credible elections are fundamental to national security and democracy.

He noted that the upcoming elections, scheduled for January 16, 2027, for presidential and national assembly elections, and February 6, 2027, for governorship and state house assembly elections, require a robust legal framework as provided by the Electoral Act 2026. Amupitan emphasized the importance of public trust in the electoral process and called for collaboration among stakeholders, including INEC, security agencies, and civil society, to fortify the electoral system against threats and ensure a credible electoral outcome.
