Global Nuclear Power Set to Triple by 2060, IAEA Reports

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) forecasts a major revival in global nuclear power, with nuclear generating capacity potentially more than tripling by 2060. This shift is driven by increasing electricity demand, energy security concerns, and the growth of artificial intelligence, which has led to a surge in data centers requiring reliable electricity.

IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi made these remarks at the agency’s 70th General Conference in Vienna, where delegates are discussing the future of nuclear energy and safety. Grossi noted that the nuclear industry is entering new territory, with emerging technologies creating opportunities for atomic energy.

He emphasized that the renewed interest in nuclear power extends beyond traditional nuclear nations, with developing countries viewing nuclear energy as vital for economic development. The IAEA is supporting these nations through training and technology transfer.

Grossi also mentioned the potential for nuclear technology in maritime shipping, which accounts for 80% of global trade, highlighting its implications for energy supply.
