Airlines Face Ticket Price Hikes Amid Jet Fuel Surge

Airlines in Nigeria are under significant pressure following a 100% surge in jet fuel prices, which has escalated operational costs. The price of aviation fuel, commonly referred to as Jet A1, has increased from approximately N900 to between N2,500 and N2,700, largely due to the ongoing crisis in the Middle East and the slow movement of crude oil.

This rise in fuel costs, which accounts for 30-35% of total airline operational expenses, has prompted concerns about the sustainability of current ticket prices, which remain around N195,000. Chibuik Uloka, a spokesperson for a Nigerian airline, highlighted the urgent need for the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) to engage with domestic airlines to maintain fare levels amid rising costs.

Industry expert Samuel Caulcrick noted that the increasing fuel prices could lead to inevitable fare adjustments, as airlines struggle to cope with the financial pressures. The situation is expected to worsen if fuel prices reach N3,000 per liter, potentially forcing airlines to increase ticket prices further.
