Algeria Defeats Senegal 2-0 in Women's AFCON Opener

Algeria began their Women’s Africa Cup of Nations Morocco 2026 campaign with a 2-0 victory over Senegal in the opening Group A match on Sunday evening in Rabat. The match featured a first-half penalty converted by captain Nguenar Ndiaye and a late goal from Mélissa Bethi, securing three points for Algeria.

Despite Senegal having slightly more possession, Algeria was more clinical, forcing five saves from the Senegalese goalkeeper while limiting Senegal to just two shots on target. The breakthrough occurred in the 13th minute when Ndiaye converted a penalty awarded to Senegal.

Algeria's disciplined performance improved after halftime, leading to Bethi's goal five minutes before the end, assisted by Lina Boussaha. Algeria maintained composure to secure a clean sheet and all three points, setting the stage for their next match against hosts Morocco on Thursday.

Senegal will aim to bounce back against Kenya on the same day.
