Malami's N8.7bn Fraud Trial Adjourned to June 2026

The Federal High Court in Abuja has adjourned the trial of former Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, along with his wife Hajia Bashir Asab and son Abubakar Abdulaziz Malami, to June 23, 2026. They face 16 counts of money laundering, amounting to N8,713,923,759.49, under the Money Laundering (Prohibition) Act of 2022.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) is prosecuting the case. During the proceedings, the prosecution, represented by J.S.

Okutepa, requested the adjournment due to the absence of the defense counsel. The court noted that the defense had previously sought multiple adjournments and emphasized that the absence of the lead defense counsel should not typically stall proceedings.

Justice Joyce Abdulmalik agreed to the prosecution's submission and granted the adjournment, scheduling the next hearing for June 23, 2026.
